The Studio
A Boulder fence studio, built for houses that were drawn before they were framed.
Architectural cedar, blackened steel, and bespoke gates, built for discerning properties across Boulder County.
Founded 2015
A studio practice, not a production shop.
Red Squirrel Fence Co. was started in 2015 by builders who were tired of watching generic crews cut cedar at the wrong grain, set posts shallow, and leave hardware that rusted inside a winter. Our answer was a smaller practice with a drawing board, a spec sheet, and a short list of specialist crews we actually trust on site.
We work across Boulder County. We know the permit counters in Boulder, Louisville, and Longmont. We know which HOAs ask for stained samples and which ask for elevation drawings. We know the hillsides where posts have to go deeper and the exposures that punish softwood.
Boulder sits at 5,430 feet. Freeze and thaw cycles, chinook winds off the Flatirons, and high altitude UV shape every detail of how we build.
Principles
How we work.
- I.
Studio directed, always
Every commission is directed by Red Squirrel from first site walk through final walkthrough. You have one point of contact and one line of accountability across the whole project.
- II.
Drawings before digging
You receive elevations, a post spacing plan, and a materials spec. You know what you are buying before we price it.
- III.
Specified warranty
5 year workmanship warranty. In writing, with the proposal. No vague language about industry standard.
- IV.
Boulder County literate
Permits, Design Review submittals, and neighborhood covenants are handled as part of the work, not billed as extras.
From Clients
Reputation is built one commission at a time.
“Our architect specified a clean vinyl profile to satisfy the HOA without flattening the elevation. Red Squirrel produced the submittal package, got it approved on the first pass, and the install was tidy enough that our GC reused the crew on the neighbor's project.”
“We took four bids for the cedar fence. Red Squirrel was not the cheapest. They were the only ones who walked the line with us, asked about the grain direction we wanted, and specified the footing depth in writing. Three seasons in and the top rail is still dead straight.”
“Half the back fence had lifted after a hard winter. They reset four posts, rehung the gate, and restained the run so the repair disappeared into the original. Could have pushed a replacement. Didn't.”
“We have a horse property and inherited a mess of mismatched fencing. Red Squirrel redid the perimeter in post and rail, ran cedar privacy closer to the house, and tied the whole thing together. They understood what a working property actually needs.”
“We needed the ornamental steel to return into the historic stone pilasters without looking grafted on. They drew three details, we picked one, and that is what got built. Craftsmanship and patience.”
